Fleas fleeing

Well, the fleas are fleeing the front yard. They're not completely gone yet, but they don't appear to have made it into the house, and spraying with a Dawn (blue, basic stuff -- the fancier stuff doesn't work as well) and water solution is working and it's cheap, so we've got that going for us.

Now, if we could only find a way to keep the damned grass from coming back in the front yard...

I can see why fleas would not be wanted as guests. But I don't understand about the grass. What do you usually have in your front yard if not grass?

As far as I know, we haven't had fleas. But we had a big fruit fly invasion at the end of summer this year, coinciding with our three month long garbage strike and the fruit picking season. We made some handly little fruit fly traps, but I would get sad watching the fruit flies buzz around in them, confused, and so I'd take them out to the yard and let them go.

What we're trying to do is live a little more harmoniously with our surroundings here in the Desert Southwest by planting low water use plants, preferably native plants. That includes things like sage bushes and our palo brea tree which is getting quite large lately.

We'll also be putting down some decomposed gravel as ground cover/mulch to keep down the grass population and keep down the blowing dust. We've also got a couple of raised flower beds set up awaiting plants.
