Stevie's in the hospital.

Last night we came home to find her on our bed amidst puddles of her own blood. Somehow, shortly before we got home, she managed to acquire a 3 cm long clean, deep slice on one of her hind legs. Tried putting on a pressure bandage for transport, but my first aid skill suck. The bandage fell off on the way to the vet.

Last night, the doctor was worried about nerve damage, but she is showing some movement in the leg, so that may not be a problem. She may, however, have Achilles tendon damage which would require surgery to correct along with a leg cast for a few months.

Last night she was stressed out due to the car ride to the emergency clinic. She really hates being in the car and let out yowls that would put a baby tiger to shame. This morning, she's alert, craving attention, and showing a little interest in food and water.

We looked all around the bedroom last night and found a few drops of blood on the floor along with the larger puddles of blood. We'll look again, but because of the clean edges of the wound, the doc doesn't believe this could have been cat-caused. So, we need to find what she cut her leg on before we open the bedroom door for the cats again.

All this came after I was thinking earlier yesterday afternoon that we hadn't had a cat emergency for a while and I was glad things were settling down.

Of course.

Did you ever figure out what Stevie cut her leg on?

Never did, but she was very shy about jumping up on things for a few weeks after the cast came off. She's finally back to jumping after some prompting from us (putting her up on high surfaces like counters so she could see it was safe), but she sometimes holds that leg funny when she does jump up.

And, of course, she's pretty tight lipped about the whole thing, so we may never know.

Now, that was a catty remark!

Ever since reading this post, I have been thinking about what might have happened to your cat's leg. Yesterday, I noticed one of my cats batting at a string that was hanging from our ironing board. The string is part of the ironing board cover, used to make it fit snugly. Looking at my board (a cheap one) made me notice that there were some sharp edges in its design. I wondered whether your cat had jumped up to play with the string, and become caught in the ironing board somewhere, and then had been cut leaping down...

Okay, that's probably a long shot. Why don't you post a photo of your room, and then readers can come up with suggestions about the identity of the leg-slicing device that lies in wait there?

Good theory, but we don't leave the ironing board set up because we don't want the kitties hurting themselves by knocking it over on themselves or each other.

My latest theory is she was playing under the sofa. There's not a lot of room under there, but Stevie and Lindsay are small enough to squish themselves under there as they've demonstrated many times. She may have gotten caught on an upholstery staple. I'll be checking those to make sure none of them are sticking out since we don't want a repeat of that episode.
