She's still with us...

Here's the latest...

Despite his best efforts, our vet didn't kill Cagney.

That may sound cold-hearted, but right now I am so pissed off with our regular vet that, believe me, that's a very mild assessment of the situation.

This morning, PJ and I decided to follow the advice of a few people she'd found on a diabetic cat forum and take Cagney out of the care of our regular vet in favor of a 24-hour clinic that specializes in emergency cases like hers.

By the time PJ got Cagney to the new vet's office, Cagney's blood sugar was down to 17.

That's not a typo. Seventeen.

Normal for a cat is around 120. Hers had been around 500-600, but she suddenly crashed and was in a hypoglycemic coma.

She should have been dead.

We visited Cagney in the clinic tonight and she's starting to respond to outside stimulae like petting, talking, looking her in the eye, etc. Her pink nose and paw pads are pink again instead of the pale white they were this morning. She's also warming up back to a normal temperature and her kidneys which we feared had shut down have reactivated.

Still, she may have neurological damage, but we have no idea how extensive that might be if it exists at all. She could make a full recovery within a few days or be debilitated for the rest of what's left of her life.

Right now, all we can do is wait and see and stop by to keep her company after work.

As for our original vet, I think we'll be looking elsewhere for veterinary care from now on. I've lost all faith in the man after this incident, especially since it was my blind faith in him that almost killed my little girl.

That's a mistake I won't be making again.
